Cyprus is the third
largest island in the Mediterranean which lies in the far eastern
end of the Mediterranean Sea and is well known from its 9000
years old history. Cyprus has played a major part in the history
of the Eastern Mediterranean. Its strategic position at the
crossroads of three continents, as well as its considerable
supplies of copper and timber, combine to make it a highly desirable
territorial acquisition.
The only thing that has remained the same and invariable throughout
the history is the Greek spirit. |
| Over the centuries
the island came under the sway of various rulers including the
Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, the successors to Alexander
the Great and Romans, Crusaders,Lusignans Venetians Enetions,
Ottomans and British. Cyprus current predicament stems from
its recent past as a British Crown Colony. Due to this some
of them left prominent marks behind them, with constructions
that have resisted the passage of time. |
Various castles
in the island of Cyprus are evidence of the conquerors. In
Kyrenia there are four castles, Kyrenia Castle, Kantara Castle,
St. Hilarion Castle and Buffanvento Castle. These Castles are
forbidden to Greek-Cypriots to visit ,since 37% of Cyprus is
under Turkish occupation. |
| There are three castles
in the Greek section of Cyprus, Limassol Castle, Kolossi Castle
AND Pafos Castle. |
